Let’s Talk About Sex!
11:55 a.m. – 1:10 p.m.

Talking about sex can be uncomfortable. Communication about sexual desire and sexual health can be even more difficult when we feel the pressure of disclosing a positive HIV status. But being able to talk about sex and sexual health is essential in order to develop intimacy and to form healthy physical and romantic connections.

How and when to disclose your HIV status is a deeply personal issue. Disclosure does not always follow a one-size-fits-all strategy, and may look differently depending on a number of personal factors, social contexts, and life experiences. How do we talk about our HIV status to partners we meet on websites and apps? How do we disclose to longer-term romantic partners, especially when we may fear rejection? What if there are social or cultural differences between partners?

This interactive workshop will explore strategies for disclosing your HIV status as part of a broader conversation on sexual health and sexual desire. Participants will gain new tips and techniques to be able to have candid discussions with their partners about sex and sexual health. Gaining comfort with having these open conversations not only reduces the likelihood of HIV transmission, but also opens up new opportunities for meaningful interpersonal connections and fulfilling sexual relationships

What’s the Future of Medicare, Medicaid, and ACA?
2:15 – 3:30 p.m.

Under the recent transition of the new presidential administration and the 115th Congress, new threats have emerged to Medicare, Medicaid, and the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Repealing the ACA has been a goal of many in Congress since it was first signed into law. Attempts to privatize Medicare and Medicaid have also long been discussed in political circles. The make-up of the current Congress makes these changes more feasible than in any previous year.

These programs are responsible for providing vital services to millions of Americans, especially for individuals who are older, lower-income, or living with chronic health conditions. Any changes to these programs would most deeply impact members of our society who are already vulnerable and marginalized, including people of color, LGBTQ individuals, people living with HIV/AIDS, the elderly, and those living in poverty.

As political debates rage on about the futures of these programs, it is important that we as consumers understand these programs and policies and the changes being discussed. This workshop, presented by the AARP and the LGBT Elder Initiative, will provide an overview of Medicare, Medicaid, and the ACA as they currently exist. We will also discuss many of the proposed changes being discussed and how these changes would impact individuals living with HIV/AIDS.
