Getting regular physical exercise is one of the most important things that we can do for our health. Exercise has been shown to reduce the risk for dementia, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and many types of cancer. It also has a benefit on our mental health, reducing feelings of anxiety and depression. Staying active can help older adults to live longer, better manage chronic health conditions, maintain their independence, and improve their quality of life. Unfortunately, most older adults in the United States don’t get the recommended amount of exercise.

Join the Elder Initiative and Jefferson Health for this month’s “Doctor Is In” program to learn about exercise for older adults. We’ll talk about the health benefits of exercise and learn some aerobic, muscle-building, and balance exercises that we can do on our own. We’ll explore strategies for getting started with exercise and working more physical activity into our daily lives. We’ll also discuss ways that older adults living with a chronic illness, pain, or other physical limitations can modify exercise routines to be more doable and effective.
